I think I want some Chickens...

I do! I want to get like 3 hens...actually I want to get them as chicks, so Hayden can be involved when they're babies. Then have hens....I don't think you can tell what they are at first...

2 of my friends (Michelle and Delores) have chickens and I'm really jealous of thier fresh eggs. Plus, I want to plant a garden, and I hear chicken "droppings" make fantastic fertilizer! Some of you probably think I"m nuts...my sister in law is one. She's a little phobic of chickens after a crazy chicken raising incident when she was a kid. But, I day dream over this book I have called "A Slice of Organic Life" that is full of ideas on how to be "organic" without living on a commune or your own farm. Like having potted fruit trees and having a worm composter. Basically, how to have your own little farm in the city. Anywho, one idea is to have a few chickens. Aren't they kind of cute?

Also, thanks to all of you for your kind words about my mommy melt down. You make me feel normal. I am laughing at myself about it today as I reread my post. Ah, it's nice to have somewhere to vent it.

Good Night!

Garden...totally understand. Fruit trees... totally will have one day. But chickens? I don't think so. But if I lived near you I would trade my garden goodness for your golden eggs from your chicks. I will let you clean up after them. I hear they are stiiiinky! But I could see how young kids would love that.

Yep, I'm with Beckie (See my post on Respsible pet ownership!). Chicken poop is gross! And unless you have them penned all the time they will poop wherever they darn well please. That being said.....I would LOVE to be the recipient of farm fresh eggs.......I'm planting blueberries, maybe we can work out a deal.

I've always wanted chickens! Our CC&R's won't allow it though. Maybe someday. We hardly eat eggs at our house, but I still like the thought of going out and getting eggs. And yes, I know they're work, but a lot of good things in life require work.

Hey Chickie Fantasizer, Come on out to our little farm and get some eggs! We have about 10 dozen in the fridge right now. Shoot, I would even let ya do some farm chores to earn your eggs! Autumn wouldn't mind two more regular customers either... but she total loves her cash paying customers. I think I have a banker on my hands!

Dude I am SO freakin jealous of your chickens! You need to get a rooster and then I can have a baby chick.
You don't need a "slice" of organic life...you can buy some land with will and I, and we can split it and have our own little artsy/farm-y community. But it needs to still be semi-close to Portland. I need my Belmont/Hawthorne.

I'm not sure that you can have poultry being in city limits. I will say although having fresh eggs is great, chickens are definately messy as many have said unless you have a fully fenced and covered pen with a laying house. Otherwise they will destroy your entire yard and poop everywhere. If we lived on more land we would probably have them again for sure though. (Not 60 thousand at a time though like in AR!) maybe just a few!

Don't let people dissuade you! I fought my husband for two years to NOT get chickens and I finally submitted ;-) and I DO like them. I LOVE throwing our yard and kitchen scraps out to them. FINALLY a good purpose for dandilions. They love them. Grass clippings too! I love not wasting things. Yes, I am a closet-granola!

If you want chickens, you should get some. But there is a lot of work to do first. Chicken coop, etc. Ours are fenced, so they don't destroy our yard. So far not much stink. Design your coop so it is easy to clean. Come check ours out!

I can't believe you have that Slice... book. I was just looking at that on Amazon and thinking I would like it. Something to add to my Christmas list!
